S407 INSPIRATIONS FROM AFRICAN KENTE CLOTH Gail grew up in Gary, Indiana,
a multicultural area of the midwest with many first generation immigrants.
Her love for the people and her interest in celebrating cultural diversity
has enriched her personal aesthetic. She is currently enrolled in the Bachelor
of Fine Arts Program at Indiana University where the Undergraduate Creative
Activity Partnership Grant has been awarded to her to produce a series
of Contemporary Visual Art Pieces based on the African Kente Cloth.

S407 INSPIRATIONS FROM AFRICAN KENTE CLOTH Sunday Afternoon Mini-Session, 2:00 – 4:30 This seminar will be a slide presentation of traditional Kente cloths from the permanent collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art as well as the artist’s current body of work exploring the visual potential of (1) the weave structure, (2) the checkerboard visual structure of horizontal and vertical stripes, and (3) the symbolism of the Kente cloth. The objective will be to inspire individual artists to research traditional textiles in an effort to develop their own personal style. Supplies: None.
